If you’ve had a hankering to swim in the clean waters of the Atlantic Ocean but have been afraid to take the plunge, then 2012 is your year as The Great Fjord Swim will take place for the first time on October 13th in the beautiful harbour of Killary. The organisers of the event also organise the hugely successful adventure races, Gaelforce Events.

There are two distances to choose from – 2km or 750m. The 2km event involves boarding the Connemara Lady which will bring you out to the middle of the Fjord where you jump in and swim back to shore! With the 750m event you cross the Fjord – start in Co. Mayo and finish in Co. Galway! The 750m event is perfect for those who are only recent converts to the benefits of swimming while the 2km event is for those who like to regularly take the plunge, summer or winter!
In October, water temperatures in the Fjord should be approx 14/15°, but wetsuits are compulsory nonetheless! And, whether you’re comfortable swimming breaststroke, freestyle or backstroke make sure you get your training in and get prepared for a truly special event….and don’t forget your goggles!
Killary Harbour is a fjord located in the West of Ireland in the heart of Connemara which forms a natural border between counties Galway and Mayo. It offers a very safe, sheltered anchorage with mountains to the south and north. On its northern shore lies the mountain of Mweelrea -Connaught’s highest mountain rising to 814 meters. To the south rise the Maumturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens. The area contains some of Ireland’s most awe-inspiring and dramatic scenery.
